Essaouira is dominated by strong North East trade winds, created from humid Atlantic anticyclones. They are a lot more constant in summer than in winter. They range in pressure from high subtropical to low equatorial.
The trade winds influence both the temperature and humidity at heights between 0 and 1500 metres. At greater heights, the air is drier and the winds are predominantly Northwesterly.
The temperature inversion zone (10 degrees diference) creates a ceiling that forms a "sea of clouds" at heights of 1800 metres in summer.
El Sharki (Charki)
The North-west wind is called the "Alisio". It blows from March to November at approximately 4/5 beaufort. It gets stronger from mid June to mid September (approx. 6). In winter, the winds are less consistent. The best time for wave surfing is in Autumn and Spring when we get some wonderful waves.
