Essaouira is like the "Tarifa" of Africa; a paradise for all wind and watersports, especially wind and kite surfing. You need to be experienced to surf here. Practising these sports can be dangerous if not properly supervised.
On Essaouira's wide and sandy beaches, you'll find families playing volleyball, people jogging, windsurfers sailing, fishermen enjoying the tranquillity of the bay and divers scubadiving...
There is plenty of space for the typical beach bums and sun worshipers, but the beach is really better suited to watersports. When the North East wind blows it's similar to the famous "Levante" that you get in the Straits of Gibraltar - very strong! You'd be blinded by masses of swirling sound, or even blown over!
You can do everything here; swimming, windsurfing, fishing, and golf. There are some fascinating day trips too. There's more to it, than just the attractions of the larger city.
